We see a picture of ourselves and criticize it. But the truth is, most of our voices are fine, and most of our photographs are fine as well. Except those photos where some jackass runs around at the cookout, taking "candids" of people eating hotdogs and cake.. you know who you are.. (go away!) Anyway, this vintage photograph of a couple says it all. The woman in the picture wrote notations on the backside. It reads:

"What a terrible picture.
Never again will I ever take a picture.
I always come out so terrible.
My hair looks like a mop.
Wanted you to see how fat I've gotten.
Gruesome Twosome."

Now, these people are just fine. They are dressed up. She is wearing a corsage. Her hair does not look like a mop, and she certainly is not fat. Gruesome Twosome? Hardly. We really are our own worst critics.

BRIMFIELD ANTIQUE SHOW BOUND

The Brimfield build up has begun! The Spring dates are just around the corner being May 10- 15. It is always something I look forward to attending and this spring is no exception. I've got a few things in mind I'd like to find, but will come home with some surprises no doubt. There has been lots of talk in the shop lately from people who will be making their first trip, which is always exciting. I shamelessly point them in the direction of my blogs past post titled "BRIMFIELD ANTIQUES SHOW BUYERS MANIFESTO", for tips and tricks on attending Brimfield, from a shoppers perspective, whether they ask for advice or not:)
One of my favorite dealers set up is Audrey Butterworth's in the BIG Yellow and White Tent in Mahogany Ridge. She has a great eye and her merchandise is awesome. Audrey and many of the other dealers who set up in the big tent also sell at Sage Farm Antiques. To find Audrey, go down the first row at Mahogany Ridge by the church steeple, and look for the big yellow and white striped tent.
I predict this will be a great May Brimfield show for everyone, dealers and buyers alike. People are enthusiastic and pumped. Including me!

WORTHINGTON'S DRINKING PROBLEM ~ 1865

This antique ledger and accounting book was written by Revilo L. Hare following the death of his father Abraham Hare who died July 30th 1865. The book covers the period from 1865 to 1889. Revilo, the eldest son, was the trustee of his fathers estate, and was given the task of managing his brother Worthington's share.
Notations and lists of subjects include "personal property appraised of the estate of Abraham Hare", expenses while settling the estate, Worthington Hare's cash account, and Worthington Hare - articles of appraised property taken by him after the appraisal. All items paid for by Revilo on behalf of Worthington is listed, including stock for his store, personal expenses such as room and board, also expenses for his wife's funeral. Also included are descriptions of why so much money was spent during a particular period of time, and a detailed description of Worthington's drinking problem.
Revilo writes "The reason why Worthington's share of the property was left in my hands to be used as I thought best for his comfort and support was because he had been subject to periodical spells of drunkenness from the time he was a boy and his Father could do nothing with him, and Father knew if Worthington had the control of his property when he was on his sprees he would very soon squander it away".. Revilo then goes on to describe Worthington's pattern of drunkenness, who supplied him with liquor, etc. and the difficulties of managing of his business (the store) during his drunken periods.
According to my research, this Hare family lived in Lexington New York and is listed in the Lexington NY County Greene census in August of 1850.
(in 1850) Abraham Hare, age 52 / Farmer / Value of real estate owned $3,000.00. Married in Lexington, NY to Mary Loomis, who was born 1803 Windham NY, daughter of Oliver Loomis and Sarah Upson. Children of Abraham and Mary in 1850 were Harriet age 28, Revilo age 24, Mary age 16 and Worthington age 7.
This book is offered for sale here at the Antique Odyssey at $110. It is fascinating reading and gives an intimate glimpse into the lives and details of this family so long ago. (SOLD AS OF 5/4/2011)

I HAVE RETURNED

This poor neglected blog. For so long, a spare moment was so difficult to come by. I cannot thank my family and friends enough for all the loving support during the difficult year that has passed. Special thanks to Holly for giving up her time and energy in keeping the shop open when I was unable. If not for you Holly, the Antique Odyssey would now be just a memory!
So, now I'm back in the swing of things I think. Business hours are by chance, but best chance is Wed. - Sat. 12pm - 5pm.
Again, my sincere gratitude to everyone!

1ST PLACE 3D / SCULPTURE

This amazing piece won 1st Place in the 3D / Sculpture Category at the Duxbury Art Association's Midsummer Art Show. Elvis Costello's "North" came out in 2003, but is new for me. Occurred to me while listening, how "rainy" the CD is. Moody and melancholy in a dreamy kind of way. If I happened to be heartbroken right now, it would probably bring me to tears. (I'm glad I'm not heartbroken at the present time, as a teary shopkeeper is indeed a very sad thing, aside from being bad for business) But here I was thinking I was just so introspective with the rainy feeling of this CD, until I looked it over better.. and saw a couple of photographs of a very fetching Elvis wearing a raincoat.. rain on his shoulders.. rain in the sky.. I wonder where I got the idea this CD was rainy!?! Anyway.. way to go Elvis. "Wright's Silver Cream" is the best product to use in my opinion. It's found in most grocery stores and does a fabulous job. My advice is to always wear rubber gloves, sensitive skin or not. (Your cuticles will thank you later.) I like using a slightly damp soft rag instead of the little sponge that is provided inside the jar, and always wash the item well after the polishing with very warm water and a soapy sponge. Never in the dishwasher. Dry immediately. Voila! Sparkling clean polished silver!

"SEX AT THE X"

Don't miss it! I have some around the house that are upwards of twenty years old... (true!) They last forever ,(nearly) and smell so good for a very long time.(though maybe not twenty years). Long before there were canned air fresheners (yuck), this was one of the ways to freshen and scent a home. They are all natural, and smell better than anything sprayed from a can. I've been asked how I go about making them so here goes.

Materials needed:
1. A thick skinned orange. Navels are nice. I've used grapefruit, lemons and limes as well, but the oranges smell the best.
2. Whole cloves, whole cinnamon sticks, and some ground cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice. Don't spend a fortune here. The Dollar Stores usually have them for a buck or so.
3. Natural type gardening string or ribbon.
4. A knitting needle or penny nail and a long large sized crochet hook

To stud the orange, you can either just plunge the cloves right into the orange, pressing with your fingers, or make little holes with the knitting needle or nail. (not too deep, just enough to start the hole). I like the knitting needle (easier on my fingers).. using a technique of making a half dozen holes at a time, then filling each with a clove. Don't make a bunch of holes and then not fill them with the cloves.
You can either make an design on the orange with the studded cloves, or stud the entire orange all over. You can do this project in phases over the course of a couple or three days.. leaving the orange out with the cloves, and studding here and there when you have a few minutes. After a few days, you'll start to see the skin of the orange toughen up, and it might get a bit difficult piercing the skin, depending on the age of the orange to start with.
When you've got the orange studded as you like, You can leave it as it is to cure. Just put it in a place where the air can get to it, and in a wooden bowl or something that breathes. Give it a little turn every time you pass by. Or, to hang it, use the long crochet hook to make a hole completely through the orange, starting at the stem end. Loop the string onto the crochet hook and pull it on through. Tie a cinnamon stick on the loose ends and pull the loop up so the stick holds at the bottom. (preventing the orange from slipping off the string) The orange might leak some juice during this process, which is fine. Liberally sprinkle the whole thing with some of the ground spice. Some will stick, some wont. You can then hang the orange to cure. This can take several weeks or more, depending on atmospheric conditions inside your home. But all the while, the air will be filled with the scent of citrus and spice. Yum.. You'll almost want to take a bite. So much beauty in one place. Mind blowing works of art. And the story of Isabella. Her love and appreciation for the arts and passion for collecting. Her style, and the history of the museum, it is all so fascinating and enthralling. I cannot say I have a favorite there, but John Singer Sargent's incredible "El Jaleo" takes my breath away. Sargent was just 26 years old when he painted this in 1882! It is oil on canvas, and quite large in size. Titled "El Jaleo" from the name of an Andalusian or Flamenco dance. It is located on the first floor at the far end of the Spanish Cloister. And like a moth to a flame..I am drawn to it when I first enter the museum. I wish I lived with this painting so I could see it every day.

The dancer is caught in the moment.. her body bent as if her foot has just met the floor with a statement. Her shawl flying through the air. The musician with his head thrown back.. you see that he is so in the moment. The women seated.. arms flailing, you can practically hear them clapping and shouting. And the lighting? Ohh be still my heart.. incredible.. amazing.. what other words can describe it. That aged dark room with those footlights illuminating the movement of that satin skirt.. the shadows on the wall mirroring the energy. Exquisite.

The feeling I get is that Sargent captured the very moment in this performance just before its crashing climax. Where the dancer and musicians have come together, bringing themselves and each other in a thunderous buildup to those moments that are most intense..right before its over. You can FEEL THAT IN THIS PAINTING!! I will never in my life, tire of seeing El Jaleo.

GALLERY X ~ NEW BEDFORD, MA

Very happy I am to have three pieces of my "Converged Commodities" line of jewelry on exhibit at Gallery X in New Bedford Massachusetts. These steampunk pieces of wearable art were designed not for the faint of heart, and I very much enjoyed creating them. They date to the late 1880s and I think they must be sisters, so much about them is similar facially. I like old photographs for a lot of reasons, one of which is to see how women did themselves up.. the layers of lacy material on their high necked dresses, with brooches and chain necklaces.. but interestingly, no earrings. Their hair done up in sweeping curly dos with those little hat like bundles of ribboned bows. Peaches and cream complexions. So pretty and sweet.

2009 READERS CHOICE AWARDS

The Votes are in! The Antique Odyssey was given the Bronze award in the 2009 Reader's Choice Awards. These "Regional Favorites" awards are sponsored by Wickedlocal.com, a Community Newspaper Company serving Eastern Massachusetts. The Odyssey won the bronze in the South 2 Zone. Members of the community send in their votes for their favorite businesses so this really is a special honor, as it comes from public opinion. I'm honored! The Odyssey was misspelled, and I was mentioned as being in two different towns other than West Bridgewater, but who cares! I'm just thankful to all who cast their votes my way! Mucho Mucho Gracias!!

A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE

An amazing and eye popping collection of antique and vintage sewing goods has just arrived to the Odyssey. Or, the book we read may not actually even physically exist! by way of Kindle. When we've finished reading the book ..we might keep it as part of our library, but chances are we will pass it on. We might give it to a friend to read if it was good.. or we can (try to) sell it at a yard sale. It can be donated to the senior center, and I am sure, and it's terrible, that some books even get thrown away! The list goes on and on. The point is, generally we do not value books as our ancestors did.
There was a time when books were precious possessions. They were valued and treasured. Passed down from generation to generation. These books are special. They have weathered our history. They have been stored on a multitude of bookshelves. How many hands have held these books? Who were the people who read them? Imagine their lives and what might they think of how things are today if they could know.
There is something spiritual about holding a book that is over two hundred years old. The feel of the soft leather, breathing in that distinct sweet musky scent of old paper and age. Seeing the stains and marks that give it that antique patina. Touching in our hands what others before us have touched. I hope, that in two hundred years, these books will still be around to be read, held, and wondered about as we do now.

STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES, err.. They've been around so long, you can imagine your great grandmother arranging spring bouquets of multicolored peonies for her dining room table. These pink peonies are paired with coral bells and were brought into the shop from the home garden. They are softer than silk, lushly exotic, having dense yet delicate petals on firm woody stems, and are perfect for cutting. Aside from the visual beauty..they are incredibly fragrant. The scent is clean and sweet. I think everyone who came into the shop today enjoyed the flowers more than anything else! But who can blame them..antiques last forever but the peony season is fleeting.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://theantiqueodyssey.blogspot.com/2009/06/stop-and-smell-roses-err-peonies.html' title='STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES, err.. As usual, we had a blast! A big event lasting almost a week long and held three times yearly, this is perhaps one of the country's largest outdoor antique events, with upwards of 20 individual fields comprising the whole. This is more than your average antiques show or flea market. Attending it is an experience unto itself, it's a tradition... it's a happening! Over the years, people who have never "done Brimfield" have asked me all kinds of questions in preparing to go for the first time. So, it occurred to me to write up this little Brimfield Buyers Manifesto so to speak, of tips and tricks in surviving the experience from a buyers or shoppers perspective.. So, without much further ado.. Here is my Brimfield shoppers tips, tricks, and humble bumble advice:)

1. Luckily, I am only about an hour and a half drive away from Brimfield. But if you're not so close, and want to stay overnight, make reservations early. Lodging books up fast!

2. Some dealers are able to accept plastic as a method of payment but good ol' fashioned American Cashola reigns supreme. Crime does exist, sorry to say, so keep it in a safe place on your person. (but not in your underwear, that's just gross)

3. Bring a cart, with some kind of lightweight liner. Nothing is worse than lugging around a set of flatware.. or a bowling ball.. or a set of dumbbells..and you're a mile away from the car and it's hot and you want to do another field but your arms and spirit are ready to break and you're seeing all the people with their carts and thinking, "why didn't I bring a damn cart!?"

4. Remember your scouting days and be prepared. Things to put in the all important cart:
Water, so you won't faint from dehydration. (and leave more in your car in a little cooler for the drive home) A couple bungee cords, an umbrella, and a big garbage bag or plastic poncho to put over the stuff in your cart might come in handy. I've seen the sky suddenly open up and POUR a monsoon in Brimfield.. (buckets of rain, buckets of tears!) Gotta keep your strength up..stash some granola bars, animal crackers, or apples or whatever. (just avoid chocolate and other potentially melty saucy things that will muck up the contents of your cart) If you're really hungry, there are tons of various food vendors with a vast array of yummy offerings from healthy fare to carnival stuff like cotton candy etc. If the weather is full strength sun, you'll be glad you remembered sunscreen and maybe a hat so you're not fried to a crisp by the end of the day.

5. Take it my word for it.. Footware choice matters! Wear something comfortable, durable, dependable and that which offers sound footing. You'll do a LOT of walking and most of that will be on un level grass, dirt or gravel paths. Don't wear your party shoes. Your feet will thank you later.

6. Camera or no camera, that is the question. Some dealers are touchy about people taking pictures of their stuff..err I mean their fine antique treasures. Get permission or don't, it's your call.. I personally do not see what all the fuss is about.. unless you're taking shots of the dealers bending over plumber-style pulling something out from under a table... and if so, that's your own special kink.. keep it at home. Anyway, I bring a camera. What if I run into Bob Dylan (a girl can dream) and he agrees to let me have my picture taken with him!! And I'm without a camera!? I don't think so. I would need proof later when I tell my companions that I ran into Bob Dylan.

7. Leave yourself open to possibilities. If you plan on finding exactly what you are needing/wanting/desiring/pining for, you're apt to be disappointed. Sometimes I find things that I had absolutely no idea I wanted and or needed SO badly until my eyes fell upon them. The thrill of the hunt vs. the delight of the surprise. If you do go with a mission, and don't see what you're looking for.. ASK! Often, dealers will have stuff unpacked waiting for space to free up.

8. It's a modern world. Don't forget your fully charged cell so you can stay in contact with those you came with and are later inevitably separated with. "Where are you!?".. "I'm in rear of the such and such field chatting with Bob Dylan" .."ok I'll meet you in 20 minutes, I'm bringing the mounted Moose head that I just scored back to the car"... (be glad you have that cart)

9. Know the fine art of negotiating / haggling with the price. Holding up an item and saying to the dealer.."Hey!! I'll give you such and such for this"........ is so not cool. We want to politely ask what best price is .. keeping in mind if it's cheap to start, it's our lucky find at the price marked. As a seller, I've actually had people want to haggle over a two dollar item.. Cripppppees... Id like to say.. "you want that gift wrapped and carried to your car too?" If an item is priced beyond hope of negotiating possibilities, resist any urge to hurl insults. The point is, we want to remain polite and respectful no matter how things are priced.

10. If you've bought something so large that it won't fit in your cart, there are porters around who can help you out, and also, most dealers will happily "hold" it for you till you can swing by with the car later on. If you go this route, for the love of God, write down (don't rely on your fading memory) (or is that just me).. anyway.. write down the dealers name and exact location. Remember.. there are LOTs of individual fields here, and its easy to lose tract of where you were when.

11. Keep in mind, you've got to get your newly acquired items home. This means, that unless you've got a big truck or something, think twice before you buy that 8 foot iron garden gate and life size Buddha statue!

12.. Following all of this.. the most important bit of advice, is to have fun! Life is short, don't get your knickers in a knot when things don't go quite your way or when you encounter some mean spirited individual. You'll run into all kinds of people at an event such as this. Most are wonderful like yourself;) There will be lots of characters, and maybe even celebrity sightings.. but unfortunately, there will also be some sourpusses with sticks up their asses bitching about all kinds of things. Ignore them, don't let one bad apple spoil the whole bunch girl.. Embrace the diversity.. immerse yourself in the experience, have some laughs, maybe score some nice things, see the sights, and enjoy being a part of this time honored experience called Brimfield. (and don't forget the cart).

STOP YOUR SOBBING, I'VE GOT STOPPERS

Need a stopper for that decanter sitting in the china closet? Hooking up the ipod for short running-around-town type trips is a pain in the ass. When I leave the car I either have to hide everything for fear of a smash and grab, or tote the whole business around in my bag. Anyway.. Rooting around in the storage area at the shop today, I came across a box of some cassette tapes that Id forgotten about. Wowsa! I completely forgot that I've got a cassette player in the car!! The cheap ads on the back pages crack me up. With this one in particular, I don't know if I should be amused or turned on. It reads: "A wicked eyeful! That's what confronted this lucky male! "He forgot that he was a porter and had only one eye... He availed himself of those rights which his calling gave him to act like a brute. Brutal he was accordingly - and happy!"... Thus begins a gay evening session of THE PLEASURE PRIMER. Thousands are now enjoying Rollicking Bedside Fun, and you will too, when you possess this ideal bedside companion. Here's entertainment for open minds and ticklish spines. Here's lusty, merry recreation for un-squeamish men and women. Here's life with apologies to none. Collected, selected from the best there is, this zestful Primer is an eye-opener.. YOU ARE INVITED TO EXAMINE THE PLEASURE PRIMER 10 DAYS AT OUR EXPENSE. IT IS GUARANTEED TO PLEASE OR YOUR PURCHASE PRICE WILL BE REFUNDED AT ONCE!"
I wonder how many thousands succumbed to the temptation and sent away for THE PLEAURE PRIMER. (cheap thrills at 98 cents!) I'm on a new quest now.. to find an actual vintage copy and see about getting some of this rollicking bedside fun for myself.

HOPPING DOWN THE BUNNYTRAIL

I know Easter is four weeks away, but it's really not too soon to start entertaining thoughts on Bunnycakes. GalleryX in New Bedford recently held a Mardi Gras Fundraiser.. and me oh my oh, what a good time! There was a fabulous mask exhibit and auction of said masks, all created by artist members of Gallery X. Such diverse examples, one of which is modeled here by the lovely Ms. Lori. This mask is titled "Mushroom Head" and is about the coolest mask this antique dealer has ever seen.. so creatively organic! .. it almost gave me flashbacks! Food was amazing.. lots of talented chefs brought a variety of creole treats. Greg Morton, Executive Chef of "Morton's Fork Catering" in New Bedford, made a massive Jambalaya that was so awesome it set my soul (and tongue too) on fire. Wowsa! Soo yummy! Live music was provided by "Jimi Goo", a talented and heartfelt singer songwriter, and "Pumpkinhead Ted", a multi layered ensemble of a rocking rousing band. Dancers danced, drinkers drank and a foot stompin' good time was had by all. Same time next year I hope!

A FAVORITE SPOON

I've always had an issue with the concept of favorites. Color.. Work of Art.. Song.. Fruit.. Book.. Film? In cases such as those, for the love of God!.. there are JUST TOO MANY to choose from! How can I possibly choose favorites?? All great things have their own particular charms. One taking favorite status over another is nearly impossible. (ok Bob Dylan being one personal exception) Favorites are hard. There are however, cases where I can understand, and experience too, where a "favorite" can be had. It's easier to have a favorite when the category has very few to choose from. Things like a season (Fall) .. a gin (Tangurey).. or a coffee mug. (the big red one)
This spoon is a beautiful testimony to favorites. I love old flatware. I buy it ..collect it.. sell it.. use it.. polish it.. admire it..deal it..hoard it, and yes, even fondle it. I sometimes come across pieces where I JUST KNOW there's a long lost story connected to it. Such as this beauty. This spoon was someones favorite! The scratches and wear are beyond normal use. This is the spoon, that someone reached for, bypassing all others, for every meal, every stirring need, every day.. for DECADES! It has literally worn flat. It is scratched and deformed, used and abused. I looked up the pattern .. its called "Gem", circa 1871, and is monogrammed with a B.
What made this spoon a special favorite? Maybe it was the floral design that appealed to its owner.. or perhaps it was a gift and had sentimental meaning. Or, maybe this spoon just FELT right in the hand. It was favored by someone. Its extreme scraggeled wear tells a story that I wish I knew. A favorite spoon. Do you have one?

UNCLE SAM'S CAMEL

In a recent jaunt I came upon this scene. It struck me as odd that here was this God Bless America sentiment with a camel. Yes, a camel..instead of something one might normally associate .. Uncle Sam.. an elephant.. an ass.. (no, I'm not talking about George Bush).. or I don't know.. a shield, a flag, a liberty bell.. or gee, even a bean pot. Am I missing something here? .. some kind of camel irony? or is this simply creative license at work? .. Either way, I like it. It's individual personality is appreciated.. even if it is a bit Joe Coolish. And camels are, after all.. hard working animals. Its proud placement on the old storefront.. which is closed up, abandoned and somewhat neglected yet the scene is still patriotic and hopeful..kind of mimics our situation in some ways, huh? With this economy as sour as a poorly made gimlet.. health care woes.. social security is knock knock knocking on heavens door..everyone and their brother looking for bailouts.. yada yada.. Well, even still, its GOOD to be hopeful.. its GOOD to be positive.. its GOOD to be OPTIMISTIC. With our new president about to take office.. let us all celebrate and hope for better days ahead. I'll drink to that! Thanksgiving Day that is. What a great holiday.. Surrounded by family, (and everyone got along!).. with mouth watering beyond delicious food. They say that turkeys are stupid birds that will drown in rainstorms. I have to wonder how they made it as a species if that were so.. otherwise we would have been eating some other fowl. (what a word for a bird) But lucky us, not all turkeys are stupid. I for one, am thankful for that, and so much more. (like leftovers) Whats not to love about Thanksgiving? So now we're onwards into the Holiday season.. stay tuned for an Odyssey announcement!

ON EXHIBIT

A selection from my "Converged Commodities" line of jewelry has been selected to be part of the 6th Annual Holiday Exhibition and Sale at the Artworks! A variety of eras are here.. some sweet Victorian pieces with rich detailed designs, (a personal favorite) and on up into the 1960s. There are all kinds of traditional pieces of flatware, such as dinner, salad and pie forks, knives and so forth. There is an amazing set of twelve Iced Tea spoons in a hammered design! In addition to those are pastry servers, jam and berry spoons, pickle forks, nut spoons and picks, baby and youth pieces, and so much more! There are also some nice hotel, restaurant and advertising utensils. Those Victorians had a serving piece for everything under the sun! Some I can identify, others are a mystery. But good gosh almighty.. They sure are to be admired! I've got more coming into the shop during the next couple weeks. (if my wrists hold out..) Just in time for parties and get-togethers over the upcoming holidays, and I have them verrry reasonably priced! These also make GREAT gifts. I've been bringing lots of new merch into the shop with a Fall-Thanksgivingie-Feel. This Eatmor Cranberry Crate has a great patina.. perfect for holding piles of bittersweet.. or apples.. or butternut squash.. or mums.. the sky is the limit~ Ive got an old cranberry rake for sale right now too, and lots of vintage cranberry ephemera. Tis the season~ I've never met a cranberry I didn't like.

LISTENING TO:
Luna ~ "Penthouse" ~ 1995. Though I'm not a big fan of the concept of "favorites".. This may quite be my favorite Luna CD. The opening song "Chinatown" with the lyrics .. "in the tiny tiny hours.. between the evening and the day"... practically makes me swoon. The entire CD charms the bejesus out of me. More swooning.. sigh* I miss Luna live.

I've Only Just Begun.

Here begins the start of something new!
